The school years are the most exciting and scary for both children and their parents. On the one hand it’s a wonderful time marked by increased independence and a time of many firsts - first sleepover, first party, first mobile phone, first love, etc. But it is also a turbulent time marked by conflict - conflict with peers, parents and even themselves as teens find their place in the world.

Concerned parents want to save their children from heartache and pain during their adolescent years but often find this the most difficult time to be heard and understood by the teens. This is a time when help is often sought to deal with:
  • Anxiety / depression
  • Self esteem, body image
  • Conflict / anger management
  • School stress & peer relations
  • Living with ADHD
  • Living with Aspergers
  • Living with OCD

Therapeutic Approach:

1) Improving Coping Strategies

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a very effective therapeutic technique that helps young adults understand how thoughts and emotions influence actions and reactions. Learning to control how we think and feel about a situation gives us the ability to manage the situation better. So while we may not be able to control the cards we are dealt in life, we are able to control how we respond to them. This new insight helps decrease feelings of anxiety and depression and builds confidence and the self-belief that we can deal with not only the current situation, but the next and the next and the next.

2) Improving Parent-Child Relationships

Adolescence is also an important time for parents and children to stay connected with each other and strengthen communication in the family. A large part of therapy is thus focused on understanding each others perspectives, negotiating independence and working together as a family.
